Coupling Techniques


Electrospray ionisation (ESI), atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation (APCI) and atmospheric pressure photoionisation/laser ionisation (APPI/APLI) denote the most prevalent soft ionisation techniques for liquid samples. However, the generation of ions from all of these techniques are affected by the sample matrix leading to concurrent ion yields of molecular ions, quasi-molecular ion formation by adducts and fragments. In this study, the coupling of direct injection of liquid samples and photoionisation techniques, such as single-photon and resonance-enhanced multi-photon ionisation (SPI/REMPI), is realised to extend the m/z range for higher molecular weight species, which are used to decompose if thermodesorption is applied as sample injection, and to suppress matrix effects during the process of ionisation.
