Analysis of aerosol particles using a thermo/optical carbon analyzer hyphenated to soft photoionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry

Soft photoionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry hyphenated to a modified thermo/optical carbon analyzer is used to investigate the chemical nature of the carbonaceous fraction of ambient particulate matter (PM) and those originating from combustion processes. A 7-wavelength laser is utilized to gain an insight into optical properties of particles and the reactions taking place during thermal analysis. Furthermore the installation of an EI-QMS system will provide the elemental composition (C, H, N, and S) of PM and so enhances the comprehension of aerosol properties.
